In order to
design the conversion equipment to change the standard of the car from European
to US, it is important not only to be an engineer but to have knowledge of the
European and US Department of Transportation's (DOT) and Environmental
Protection Agency's (EPA) standards for the particular year the car was
manufactured. EPA modifications also require knowledge of fuel injection systems
and combustion of engine, exhaust systems and more. The DOT modification not
only required knowledge how the cars would react in impact (accident) and
changing those behaviors, but also how the interior react in fire and
controlling the rate of burning. Then the car would have modified parts
installed such as bumpers, door reinforcements, head/tail lights, seat-belts,
wind shields, and more. In this case Sam would take care of all these tasks on
his own and seldom received help from others.
Sam gained a lot
of experience dealing with body parts such as door fenders, lights, interior
carpet and upholstery, dash, console, steering, headliners as well as engine and
suspension. It is rare for one single person to have all this experience with a
particular car. Modern-day cars are equipped with lots of electronic
control unties/black boxes that have important and complex functions, thus
having an engineering background facilitates working with more complex and newer
vehicles while more traditional technicians may find it difficult. Sam and the
technicians at MBH attend Mercedes-Benz classes offered on the East coast to
stay up to date with the latest techniques of troubleshooting and train with the
newer equipment available in the industry.
Furthermore, Sam
picks and buys the entire cars for resale at MBH. These cars are examined
thoroughly prior to purchase, and some requirements include a fresh new look and
feel to the car, new smell, non smoker car, accident-free, great engine and
overall maintained excellent. If the car is not already in showroom condition it
is evaluated in order to be put such condition. The most important aspect is to
have reliable car that looks great. While most dealers mainly look at price and
mileage, they do not know or do not care to look under the hood. We earn our
reputation one car at a time. Our customers come to us for our reputation, not
sent by the Mercedes factory to us.
